Boathouse and equipment
Our boathouse is next to the River Tyne on Tyne Green in Hexham. It provides storage for the Club's boats, paddles, safety equipment and paddling clothing. Members may also (subject to conditions) store their own boats in the boathouse.
Floods, January 2005
Visitors to Tyne Green may have noticed that the boathouse looks as if it is part of a scene from a medieval siege.
Northumbria water assure us that the pipework on Tyne Green is temporary and they hope that everything will be restored to normality when the new water main for Hexham is finished, which they estimate will be at the end of this year or early 2006. In the meantime, although the boathouse was flooded, it's business as usual and thankfully no damage was done to any of our equipment.

The boats

The Club owns a substantial fleet, that includes kayaks suitable for beginners, white-water kayaks, river running playboats, sit-ons, sea-kayaks and Canadian canoes. The Club Committee has a policy of replacing boats when they become irreparable or obsolete. This year, we have concentrated on essential maintenance of our sea kayaks.

Because canoeing goes on even in the coldest weather, it is vital to wear the right clothing. The BCU has produced leaflets dealing with this question. Before buying specialist clothing or equipment, beginners are advised to speak to a coach or take the advice of experienced canoeists or a specialist supplier.
Always bring a towel and change of clothing to canoeing sessions!
